Resource Alert: Celestina Visual

This week, we would like to take the opportunity to highlight an incredible resource: Celestina Visual. This site is perfect for researchers of visual culture, Hispanic studies, print culture, medieval studies, and much more. Celestinavisual.org was created by Director, Dr. Enrique Fernandez, Professor of Spanish at the Department of French, Spanish and Italian at the University of Manitoba, as well as a team comprising of Dr. Raúl Álvarez-Moreno, Dr. Yolanda Iglesias, Dr. Rachel Schmidt, and Dr. Joseph Snow.

REPRESENTACIÓN DE MADRID, 1909.jpg

Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the site exists in two language formats: English and Spanish. It is dedicated to everything visual culture for La Celestina including illustrations, paintings, programs from theatre productions, and trailers for films. For example, this image comes from a theatrical representation of La Celestina in Madrid, Spain in 1909.

In general, the iconography on this site comes from a variety of countries and places of publication, encompassing editions both old and new.  For instance, the site includes illustrated covers spanning from 1499-1999! The site even includes a section called “curiosities” with images related to Celestina (either of her or of other relatable matchmakers/procuresses). This collection spans from reliefs, plates, posters, comics, and even a cigar box! The site is a never ending vessel of information that can inspire any researcher.

Celestina Visual also offers an extensive bibliography containing scholarly articles. In addition, it contains a section of newspaper articles and blog posts discussing the media of La Celestina (namely tv and cinema). This bibliography is a great stepping off point for researchers to engage with the representation of La Celestina through visual culture.
